What music do you listen to when you're writing? Is it any different from what you normally listen to?

I tend to listen to the same stuff as normal, and I either use my personal music collection, which ranges from classical to hard rock, or I listen to Pandora Radio.

I have a wide range of music too, however I have a few songs which are my "inspiration" songs.

For slower scenes with a lot less action but a lot of feeling, I like FictionJunction KAORI's "Tsubasa." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5mRvkfKOtg

And for faster fight scenes or quick action, Tatsh's "Xepher" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKlAN_TNLgs

I actually make play-lists of music that fits different moods, and then match what I'm listening to with what I'm writing. So if I'm trying to write something scary, I'll listen to a Horror Movie Soundtrack, and if I'm trying to write something funny then I'll listen to something more upbeat.

I also use Pandora Radio, though not as much when I'm writing because I have so little control over what kind of song will come up next.

I listen to both video game and movie/tv show soundtracks. I don't match the feel of the scene or whatnot, I just let it play in the background.

@spncram

[snort][sputter]

...Cool :D.

I like anything, I guess. Some country, some death-metal, some emo, some jazz, flamenco, instrumental, adult contemporary. I usually launch iTunes and pick a song-of-the-moment, then let the "Genius" feature fill up a playlist. When it gets old or intrudes (when I start to notice the song and not the story), on to a new song-of-the-moment and genius list.

Getting into specifics: Muse (usually from Absolution), MCR, Chicago, The Fountain OST (Clint Mansell), Peter Schilling Techno Remixes (!), Deftones, Clapton, Evanescence, The Frey, Fergie, Sting, Inscendio, Tom Petty, Simon and Garfunkel, Cheryl Crow, Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime), Rammestein, Morrissey, Eurythmics, Enigma, Cutting Crew, Gloria Gaynor.

Not exactly Top 40...   ;).

Aaaah. I'm glad I didn't go look at that. I should have realized.

Depends on the story/genre, as with many people. For my current story, so far I've got the "Boys on the Side" soundtrack, Paul Simon's "Graceland," and Sting's "Nothing Like the Sun" in rotation. That will change as the story arc progresses. And I suspect before too long I'll be up to my fingerless gloves in 80's music.

So it begins...

mmmm lots of indie rock and country  but my real favorites to write to, much to my 12 yr old's distress, is showtunes!

Cats
Chess
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Paint Your Wagon
Camelot
Sound of Music (Broadway & film)
Fiddler on the Roof
Hello Dolly (WALL-E!)
A Little Night Music

then I scatter in music from when I was a kid in the 70s (no disco!) and from my college years in the 80s..

It is my duty to inform you that around here (more precisely, around me), people who rickroll die in totally unsuspicious accidents. Just a warning. I have nothing to do with it. I think it's the gods of fate's designs being accelerated in my vicinity.

I listen to Metal! Kamelot's my current favorite, with Nightwish coming in a close second. I also throw on some Rob Dougan every once in a while, or if I'm feeling REALLY crazy I put on some Mozart. Trance is alright. It deadens the mind to the point that I can think clearly. To be honest, I just need something there that's familiar and not too complex. Hence why Mozart is usually out.

I write much, much faster (and for longer stints) if I'm listening to Electronic / Trance. I've been listening to the AH.FM stream through iTunes. On Friday and Saturday nights, I really like listening to VFX's (98.3 FM - station based in Logan, I think) "State of the Union" show.

Yay Metal! I totally got into the genre via Nightwish and similar bands (Within Temptation, Xandria, etc) but am now rocking out quite a lot more than those bands allow for.
I'm totally into thrash right now. OMFG. I love Sepultura! I don't know why, but I heard them and was like whoa!
Also Amon Amarth for the weekly dose of Viking Metal-the genre @ its most perfect state because EVERYONE knows Vikings Are Metal and Metal IS the musical equivalant of Vikings.
ahem.
Also, Arch Enemy is a favorite. :) As is Opeth.

ok. done now. but yes, my novel centers around metal, so it's pretty awesome. and will have a Great soundtrack  when it's made into a movie. mwahaha :)

I'm a really big music junkie, so it's always there in the background. I love a million species of rock (alternative, indie, a little punk, modern) and some jazz and/or classical piano. Usually I don't do mood music so much as I do how the lyrics match up with a scene or emotion. Stockholm Syndrome by Muse inspired a whole chapter, as did There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet by Panic at the Disco.

My top playlist (for writing and otherwise) consists of Muse, Panic at the Disco, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Anberlin, and the Killers.

Mainly I listen to Les Mis. I've been hooked ever since I saw it at Tuacahn back in August.

That was a great production. Me and my wife saw it in August too. :)
