Well, we have a chat server for our own use now. It is an IRC server with a web interface, for those who don't want to bother with using a full blown IRC client.

The web interface is here: http://www.utahwrimos.net/pjirc/

If you have an IRC client, click here: irc://irc.kydance.net/nanowrimo

Kydance.net is my business domain, and since the IRC server may see uses for my business as well, I figured I'd stick it there.

For those unfamiliar with IRC, once you log in through the web interface, all you really need to know is that to change your name from Guest?? to whatever you want, you just type '/nick <whatever>'. For example, if you wanted your name to be Foobar, you would type '/nick Foobar'.

Ummmmm...I haven't been able to get into the chat for a while now. It gives me this:
Startup error: java.lang.Exception: Mandatory 'port' parameter not provided

Any ideas?

That's wierd...

I just tested it, and it worked for me.

Not sure why it's not working... In the meantime here are a couple links for other clients that don't require Java. :)

http://www.xchat.org/ - XChat. This is a full standalone application with lots of features, although it'll work pretty well right out of the box, and is fairly simple.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16 - Chatzilla. This is an extension to Firefox that adds an IRC client to Firefox itself. Also very easy to use, but not nearly as many features.

With either of those installed, paste this into your address bar (I can't make it clickable...): irc://utahwrimos.net/nanowrimo
