Utah Wrimos Writing Group [was: What Now?]

Well, November is over. Congratulations to everyone.

What now? Well, for starters, I'd like to see form a Utah Wrimos writing group. The basic idea is simple: We take turns sending out small pieces of our writing to the group, and get back reviews and comments that will hopefully help our writing improve. In return, you do the same thing for other people when they send their writing out. You don't have to review every piece of writing that gets sent, but you should be trying to review at least half of them, or people might stop reviewing yours.

How many people would be interested in this? The size of the pieces for the group would be 3-5k words, and if we have enough people, you would only need to send one out every 4 weeks or so. The exact details would be decided by those who are interested.

I like the idea, utoxin.  I enjoy giving feedback, so I'll give it a go.  We may just want to establish some general guidelines about giving and receiving feedback.  Namely, if you're expecting to receive it, you should be giving it too.  There's a tendancy of online writer groups to end up heavy on people submitting excerpts for feedback, but light on actually giving it to others.

Sounds fabulous. I've joined Reading Excuses over at the TWG forums, but a local focus group would be great. Nobody would get offended if I submitted the same content to both groups, would they? I promise to comment here!

If they get offended by that, they're too sensitive. Submit it whenever and wherever you want.

The forum has been created here. It is restricted to people who want to participate, and I've posted a short set of rules in it.

Sounds great, I was hoping someone would suggest this idea... I need a writing group since my high school club is with me no longer or I'm not with them, in any case. Awesomesauce.

If anyone writes sci-fi/fantasy -- well, heck, if anyone is interested in writing groups at all -- they can check out www.critters.org for an example of a VERY successful online-only group.  They have firm rules about providing feedback in order to receive feedback, and it works very well to keep a give-and-take going.

I like the sound of this. I've never done an online group--in fact the first writer's group I joined was about 6 months ago and is an in-person group, but I'm definitely open to the idea of online.
